What to do if a carrier fly-tips your waste

  1. Don't move or touch hazardous items. If there's a risk to people or the environment, call the Environment Agency incident hotline on 0800 80 70 60 (24 hours).
  2. Report it to your local council. Small-scale fly-tipping is handled by the council's environmental health team. Find your council or see gov.uk: report fly-tipping.
  3. Report large-scale dumping (for example a lorry load) to the Environment Agency, or anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
  4. Gather your evidence. Receipts, bank transfers, messages, adverts, the van registration and the carrier's name and number. This helps the council trace the fly-tipper and shows you took reasonable steps.
  5. Next time, check first. Search the register before you hand over any waste.
