A skip hire company takes your waste away and is responsible for getting it to a permitted site. Under your household waste duty of care you should take reasonable steps to make sure it is allowed to do that. The government code of practice says checking the carrier is registered is one of those steps.
What to check before you book
- Ask for the waste carrier registration number. In England a firm collecting other people's waste for a fee normally needs an upper tier registration, which starts with CBDU.
- Search the number or company name on our checker. Results come from the Environment Agency public register.
- Check the name and address match the company on your quote or invoice, and that the registration has not expired.
- Ask where the waste goes. A legitimate firm can tell you which transfer station or recycling site it uses.
- Get it in writing. Keep the quote, invoice and registration number together.
Skips on the road
If the skip will sit on a public road, a permit is normally needed from your council. The skip company usually arranges this; ask them to confirm. See gov.uk: apply for a skip permit.
Warning signs
- No registration number, or one that isn't on the register
- Cash only, no written quote or receipt
- A price far below other quotes
