Social media adverts for cheap rubbish collection are common. Some are legitimate, some are not. If your waste is later found dumped and traced back to you, your council can look at whether you met your duty of care.
Quick checks
- Ask for their waste carrier registration number before they arrive.
- Search it here. Someone collecting your rubbish for money would normally need an upper tier registration (CBDU).
- Check that the name on the register matches the person or business you are paying.
- Note the van registration and keep your receipt or bank transfer record.
Red flags
- They can't or won't give a registration number
- Cash in hand with no receipt
- No company name, address or website
- Vague answers about where the rubbish will go
